Brain Momba is a Zimbabwean self-taught visual artist working primarily in pastels and charcoal. His practice blends elements of surrealism and realism, merging human figures and portraiture with symbolism drawn from the natural world. Central to his work is a celebration of women—their beauty, presence, and cultural expression—often explored through hairstyles and haircare as symbols of identity, memory, and emotional strength.
Momba’s compositions carry a strong narrative quality, using expressive mark-making and tonal contrast to convey intimacy and psychological depth. His work balances tradition and experimentation, advancing familiar techniques while embracing innovative approaches to form and storytelling.
In addition to his studio practice, Momba holds a Diploma in Education from Belvedere Technical Teachers’ College and teaches Art & Design at Kutama College. There, he guides students in drawing, painting, and mixed media, contributing to the development of emerging artists while continuing to refine his own creative voice.
